Baby Shampoo Buying Guide

Baby Shampoo Reviews

What is a Baby Shampoo?

Baby Shampoo1When it comes to choosing a baby shampoo for your baby, you may think nothing of grabbing a bottle of baby shampoo off the shelf and using it. That is what many do. But there are a lot of chemicals in those off the shelf shampoos that are not specifically organic and all natural and sometimes those chemicals can cause problems that a parent may not even be aware of.

The multi-million dollar industry that promises to help parents keep their baby’s skin perfect, yet it is those very products that can sometimes be responsible for all kinds of problems from dry skin to rashes. The truth of the matter is that the fewer soaps, lotions and shampoos you use on your baby the better off their skin will be.

When you DO choose a baby shampoo, if you take care to choose one that is all natural, organic and allergenic, you can use a minimal amount, get your baby smelling fresh and clean and not sacrifice the health of their skin doing it. There are many terrific baby shampoos on the market today that fit the bill for all natural and organic.

Ingredients to Watch Out For

We’re going to list some ingredients that you want to watch out for in the products that you use for your baby. These are ingredients that have been shown to cause potential problems.

  • FragrancesFragrance is added to SO many things, the list might stagger you; diapers, powders, shampoos, soaps, lotions, wipes and more. The purpose of fragrance is to make sure that the chemical smell is not present or detectable. Companies are not required to reveal what they use in the fragrance that is added so there can be all kinds of unsafe chemicals in them, all under the guise of “fragrance”. Look for baby shampoos that are fragrance free or where the scent comes from the ingredients themselves and not a perfumed cover up. Fragrances on the baby’s skin can cause rashes, eye irritations and in some cases respiratory problems.
  • 1,4 dioxane and Ethylated Surfactants1,4 is never listed as an ingredient yet according to studies done by the Environmental Working Group 57 percent of baby soaps contain it. If any of the ingredients in your baby’s shampoo have the letters “eth” in them, then you can be fairly certain that there is 1,4 dioxane in it. Some examples of ingredients to look for that will indicate the presence of this ingredient include:
    1. Polyethylene
    2. Polyethylene glycol
    3. Sodium laureth sulfate
    4. Ceteareth
    5. Oleth
    6. Oxynol
    7. Xynol
  • Parabens – You will find parabens everywhere, soaps, shampoos, body washes, moisturizers and more. They are linked to many issues including skin irritation, hormone disruption and reproductive toxicity. If you want to avoid this chemical, stay away from anything with paraben in the name or anything with benzoic acid and propyl ester.
  • DEA and TEA – Diethanolamine and Triethanolamine need to be avoided so check those labels and if the shampoo you are considering has these ingredients in it, leave it on the shelf. Both of these chemicals react with nitrites which are often added to shampoos. The combination of these ingredients causes carcinogenic nitrosamines to be formed and those can get into the infant skin at an alarmingly fast rate.

Baby Shampoo2When it comes to getting the right baby shampoo for your baby, take into consideration any special needs that your baby may have such as eczema or cradle cap. Below we’ve discussed some of the types of baby shampoos that are readily available.

Mild Baby Shampoo – Mild shampoos that don’t contain synthetic fragrances, artificial colors or irritating preservatives are going to be the best choices. All shampoos contain preservatives of some kind. The objective a parent has is to find shampoos that have the least amount of preservatives as possible. This will take some label reading and paying attention to the ingredients that are present in the baby’s shampoo you are considering.

All Natural Shampoos

Using baby shampoos that are made with all natural ingredients will help reduce the amount of chemicals that your baby is exposed to. All natural ingredients will contains botanical surfactants, essential oils, Jojoba oils, and even fruit extracts.

There are many organic and all natural shampoos on the market including our three top rated choices that have none of the parabens and problematic chemicals in them. These gentle and nice smelling baby shampoos are excellent for the baby’s skin and scalp and do not cause irritation or rashes to develop.

If you want scents that are appealing, avoid the perfumed varieties that can cause harm to the skin and go with all natural herbs like lavender or chamomile that also have a benefit of calming the baby as well so they can sleep sounder.

Is Tear Free- Really Tear Free?

A lot of baby shampoos claim to be “No more tears” but even these varieties have chemicals that can irritate and string the eyes. The organic shampoos that claim to be tear free will more than likely be the ones that will not burn or sting the eyes due to the absence of the ingredients that are usually responsible for the stinging and burning in the first place.

The answer to this question depends on the age of your baby. A newborn doesn’t do a whole lot to “get dirty” so bathing every night and shampooing their scalp and hair is not a necessity. Many parents use bathing the baby to help them calm down and relax before bedtime so they sleep better. Lavender is a wonderful herb that is used in some organic shampoos strictly for the purpose of calming a fussy baby during bath time.

Baby Shampoo3If you are using a mild, organic shampoo to wash your baby’s hair and scalp, it will be okay to wash them every night even though it isn’t necessary. Baby’s skin is 5 times thinner than adult skin, so it doesn’t take much shampoo at all to get them clean. Giving your newborn a bath every other day or even just 203 times a week is more than sufficient for keeping the baby clean and not over drying their skin.

Once they start feeding themselves, crawling around and being more mobile, a nightly bath becomes more of a necessity than just a way to calm and relax them at night.

With all of the choices for baby shampoos on the market today, it may seem like a big job to choose ONE that will meet the needs of your baby and satisfy your preferences as well. Between the three top rated choices that we reviewed here and the information we have provided for you on what to look for and what to avoid, you have the information you need to sort through all of the choices available and come up with the choice that will be the best.

Many people don’t think twice about chemicals that are in regular baby products and even after reading this, many will continue to get the baby shampoos they have always used and that is okay. The intention of this review and buyer’s guide is not to judge or make a parent feel badly for their choices, it is to give them the information and knowledge that they can choose to use if they want.

In many cases, parents don’t realize that baby shampoos and other products even have these potentially dangerous chemicals in them so this can be news to some. We have provided this information about these chemicals so we can to help parents make an informed choice and make sorting through all of the brands and types much less stressful. When parents understand and know what they are dealing with, they can make the choices that are the best for them and their families.
