Rolling Paper Buying Guide

Rolling Paper Reviews

Types of Rolling Papers

rolling-paper1There are several different paper materials that rolling papers are made of. We have listed all the different kinds that you can purchase below with some characteristics of each.

  • Wood Pulp – Rolling papers were first made from wood pulp. This is the same material that is responsible for regular cigarettes and printer paper as well. These are the easiest type of rolling papers to find. They have a medium to fast burn rate and can stay lit even in a strong wind. The drawback to wood pulp rolling papers is the taste which is the worst out of all the varieties and leaves a less than pleasant aftertaste. They also produce the most ash and burn less cleanly as well. From a health perspective, they are the lowest quality rolling papers you can choose. Wood pulp rolling papers can be 100% wood pulp or can even be blended with flax. They come in bleached or unbleached varieties. The less processed your rolling papers are the better they will taste while you are smoking.
  • Hemp – Hemp rolling papers are usually made from 100% hemp and the majority comes unbleached. Hemp rolling papers come in a variety of thicknesses and have a thicker feel than rice rolling papers do. The textured feel of hemp papers gives the smoker a good grip and makes for super easy cigarette rolling. This type of rolling paper stays lit better and has a mild, pleasant taste that is musky or sweet tasting. Hemp rolling papers are also the most environmentally conscious.
  • Rice – Rice rolling papers are made from processed rice and other additives including flax and sugar. This is the thinnest of the rolling paper types. Rice rolling papers have the slowest burn rate and least noticeable taste of all the choices. They are super thin and very smooth with no texture, which makes rolling cigarettes a challenge but with practice or a rolling tray it gets a lot easier. The drawback to rice papers is that they can go out if they are not being smoked constantly.

Novelty Rolling Papers

In addition to the regular rolling papers we have covered above, there are some novelty types that are available as well. These novelty types include flavored rolling papers, gold rolling papers and transparent papers made from cellulose. The novelty types are not recommended for those who smoke cigarettes on a regular daily basis, as they are more for special occasion cigarettes.

Rolling Paper Sizes

Rolling papers are available in a variety of different sizes. People who roll their own cigarettes have different preferences when it comes to the size of the cigarettes they like to roll. Some like larger and longer ones while others prefer the thinner, smaller ones. Whichever your preference is, there is a rolling paper size that can accommodate it. We have listed the most common sizes below.

rolling-paper2Single – Single wide papers typically measure 2.6” -2.75” long x 1.33” – 1.41” wide. This single wide size is the most common and can easily be found anywhere. They can be difficult to roll cigarettes with but some love the slim profile.

1 ¼” – This size rolling paper holds about 25% more tobacco than the single wide size does. This is the most popular size on the market due to the increased width that allows for a thicker cigarette.

1 ½” – These are a little wider than the 1 ¼” size and give you a bigger diameter as well. It is less common for smokers to use this size but they are not hard to find.

Double Wide – These rolling papers are designed to double the tobacco capacity but from a smoking perspective they tend to not be very efficient. Most people end up not using the whole size which results in more waste.

King Size – This is the largest standard rolling paper size available. They come in a slim variety which works well for those who are used to smoking 100s in commercial brands. This extra long size makes the king size rolling paper the second most popular size that smokers purchase.

Flavored Rolling Papers

There are many different flavors of rolling papers on the market today. Whether you want a fruity taste to your cigarette or want to try the chocolate or coconut flavors, if you like added taste to your cigarette, these are a lot of fun.

There have been some recommendations that smoking flavored cigarettes that have been hand rolled is not a good idea on a regular daily basis, but there are no studies to support these recommendations so this would be a decision you would need to make based on your own research.

Flavored rolling papers do burn faster than the other kinds but if you really like the taste of the different flavors, this may not be that big a deal for you. When burning, they smell good as well which improves the sensory experience of smoking as well.

The Importance of Customer Reviews

Using Customer reviews to find out some detailed information can be really beneficial to choosing the right product. Customer reviews are really very valuable when it comes to learning as much as you can about something you are considering purchasing. Customers who have purchased a product are usually very happy to share their experiences and these experiences can help you decide if this is the right choice for you.

This gives you an inside view on how the product performs in real world circumstances. You can find out things like how fast the papers burned, how easy they were to handle, whether there was an aftertaste or not and more.

Most sale sites are not going to have this type of inside view on their websites, so you can find out whether a product is a good purchase, BEFORE you actually purchase anything which can save you a lot of money in the long term. You won’t have to purchase rolling papers only to find out that they are not that good.

rolling-paper3Although people have different preferences, if there are a lot of bad reviews on a product, you might want to pay attention and heed their advice. Every product, even the most popular ones, are going to have the occasional bad review so don’t expect perfect 5 star reviews from everyone, but what you should do is look for a trend. If the majority of people who have purchased the rolling papers have left a positive review, you can feel pretty confident that they are good ones to purchase.

There are many different decisions you will need to make when it comes to choosing the right rolling papers for your cigarettes. These decisions include what type of paper you want to use, what size paper and whether you want traditional hemp, rice or wood papers or you want to experience as many different flavors as you can. After you make all these decisions, then you are ready to do some research on which brands are the best quality.

The information in this guide is designed to help you sort through all the different options and come up with the best choice for your specific needs. With the right knowledge you can make an informed decision and not have to rely on guesswork or hope as to whether you have purchased a quality product or not.
